Acupuncture is an energy medicine practised in China and the East for thousands of years. By diagnosing areas of deficient, excess or stagnant Qi (energy), tiny sterile needles can be used to stimulate and encourage a restorative flow of Qi into the required organ fields or channels of the body. This allows the energetic body to be guided towards a more desired harmonious equilibrium, leading to a cessation of uncomfortable and unwanted symptoms - holistically.

Ancient Chinese physicians mapped out the channels or meridians in which it was said the Qi flowed. They intuited various points along these energy pathways that when stimulated by tiny needles, produced desired affects beneficial to health. Today, these points have been verified as areas of dramatically decreased electrical resistance, compared to the surrounding tissue, and are easily discernable by the trained practitioner.

In the West, we use acupuncture to heal or reduce a wide variety of physical and emotional symptoms, and also just to gain a greater sense of well-being that is constantly being challenged by the stresses of working and raising a family in the 21st century. Tom's gentle approach has allowed many apprehensive about treatment, to feel relaxed and easy with this somewhat unfamiliar therapeutic technique. Almost without exception patients leave feeling relaxed, and enjoying a greater sense of well-being.

Oriental Herbs
Arguably the most important part of traditional Chinese medicine (acupuncture, herbs, tui na, diet and exercise), this unique therapy enables the herbalist to successfully treat an impressively wide range of complaints. With a specific diagnosis tailored to the individual, the practitioner can stimulate the body's intuitive healing power to right itself in a natural and gentle manner. As with acupuncture, the use of Chinese herbs enables healing of the underlying root cause of the patient's symptoms, as opposed to merely suppressing them - one of the limitations of pharmaceutical drug therapy.

Unlike more modern paradigms, Eastern herbal medicine has been refined and constantly updated for the past three thousand years or more. The affects on the body by the herbs are well known and correctly prescribed, bothersome symptoms will recede to be replaced by a greater feeling of all round health and well-being. Herbs work more slowly than modern drugs, but medicinal prescriptions are modified throughout in recognition of the changes the body shows in response to treatment along the way.

Although traditionalists might argue that herbal teas brewed up by the patient are the only or best form of ingesting herbs, Tom also uses more user-friendly powders and capsules that comply with the demands of hectic lifestyles.

As with any herbal tradition - Eastern or Western - the source quality is paramount. Tom only uses herbal medicinals from trusted sources - members of the Chinese Medicine Association of Suppliers (CMAS) that comply with standards laid down by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (formerly Medicines Control Agency).

'Yin Tui Na'
Tom is developing his own way of assisting healing in situations where there is an energetic blockage often held by an emotional energy. It draws on various 'bodywork' disciplines he has worked with; massage, Qi Gong healing, cranial sacral techniques - and principally Yin Tui Na. Tui Na ("tway na") is a Chinese therapy practised in hospitals and clinics today, and could be described as a mixture of massage, physiotherapy and acupressure. Tom sometimes uses a derivation of this to encourage energy to flow after physical trauma, stress related pain and in the treatment of Parkinson's Disease [see the Parkinson's Recovery Project www.pdtreatment.com]. It is a style of therapy that works through the Qi or electromagnetic fields of both patient and practitioner.
